The first edition of Grimm's Fairy Tales was published in 1812, just six years after the tragic occupation of Germany by Napoleon. Consequently, the passion for pursuing a lost utopia and the desire for German national unity, which emerged during this tragic period in Germany, became the driving force behind their creation.
Secondly, the Grimm brothers believed that the division and lack of unity among numerous German city-states led to Napoleon's invasion, and that the unification of the German nation must begin with the unification of language and culture. Therefore, they devoted their entire lives to making unremitting efforts for the construction of German language and culture.
During the period from the end of the 18th century to the 19th century, it was the heyday of German culture, with Goethe and Schiller in literature, Kant in philosophy, and Mozart, Beethoven, and Haydn in music.
Fourthly, influenced by a strong sense of national identity, the public gradually became interested in the history, myths, legends, and even folk tales of the Germanic peoples. It was against this backdrop that the Brothers Grimm's fairy tales were born.
